Europe Must Work

The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) is the voice of workers in Europe. Founded in 1973, it represents around 45 million members through 94 national trade union organisations across 42 countries and 10 European industry federations. It promotes social rights, decent work, and dialogue with European Union institutions, helping to shape policies towards a more fair and inclusive dimension.

Brand design. Symbols of work and unity.

Inarea led the confederation’s rebranding on the occasion of the 8th Congress of the European Trade Union Confederation in Brussels (1995), highlighting the key elements of its visual identity: red evokes struggle, solidarity, and the labour movement, while white ensures contrast and legibility. The new mark retains the pictograms symbolically representing workers on the move, enclosing them within a red and white ellipse to achieve greater definition. The payoff “Europe Must Work” ultimately reinforces the urgency of a Europe founded on employment, rights, and social cohesion.

1st May 1994: Peace in Sarajevo

In the city which is the symbol of the war in former Yugoslavia, the European Trade Union Confederation, with the support of the UN, is organising a return to May Day celebrations. The meaning of the holiday is as simple as it is profound: peace and work are inseparable values.

The image we’ve created depicts a mason’s trowel in the act of fixing a crack in a bombed-out wall, while at the same time forming the shape of a dove. The symbol of peace thus becomes a symbol of reconstruction and, consequently, of work.
