Authority in environmental water management

AUBAC, the River Basin Authority of the Central Apennines, is the public body responsible for territorial planning related to hydrogeological risk management, water resource protection, coastal defense, and the sustainable use of soil in central Italy. In line with EU directives, it pursues two main objectives: protecting the territory and monitoring the environmental status of water bodies.
In collaboration with ISPRA and the Ministry of the Environment, AUBAC promotes an integrated approach aimed at making the territory more resilient to climate change and extreme events, while ensuring the efficient and sustainable management of natural resources.

Brand design and naming. The “U” that embraces the territory

Through its brand design work, Inarea aimed to shift AUBAC’s image from that of a purely technical body focused on research and data collection to a true point of reference for territorial protection—an institution capable of translating data into decisions, guidance, and concrete actions, thanks to its deep and informed knowledge of the region.
The logo, built around the acronym of the name, emphasizes the letter U, which opens in a dynamic form, evoking the concept of a basin—a key element in the Authority’s identity and mission. The U becomes a frame that embraces images of the Central Apennines, symbolizing a sense of care, protection, and stewardship. The predominant color palette features shades of blue, highlighting the connection to water and the Authority’s role in safeguarding water resources.

Editorial & communication design. A variation on the theme of blue

Inarea developed the brand identity across all the touchpoints that define AUBAC’s image, making the Authority visually consistent and easily recognizable. As part of this effort, it also designed AUBAC’s first Annual Report—a key publication that highlights the Authority’s main initiatives and provides in-depth analysis of climate data and water resources within the district.
